Announcement: Michael Mitchel Appointed as Soto Deshi to Sensei Rob James
We are proud to formally announce the appointment of Michael Mitchel as a Soto Deshi (Outside Disciple) under Sensei Rob James, founder of MOUKO KAI KARATE.
What Is a Soto Deshi?
Why Michael Mitchel
Unwavering commitment to the MOUKO KAI path
Respect for the lineage, and values of the art
Consistent self-discipline and physical intensity
A deep hunger for truth, structure, and spiritual growth
He has trained not just with his body, but with his character — showing up when things were not going well in his personal life, embodying the spirit of Budo even when outside the walls of the dojo; persevering under mental pressure.
A Word from Sensei Rob James:

In traditional Japanese martial arts, a Soto Deshi (literally "outside disciple") is a dedicated student who trains under the close guidance of a Sensei, while living and operating outside the walls of the dojo.
Unlike an Uchi Deshi (live-in student), the Soto Deshi balances training with responsibilities in the outer world, yet the level of commitment, loyalty, and discipline is no less intense.
To be a Soto Deshi is not about location. It is about initiation, integration, intent, and honour.

Michael has consistently demonstrated:

This recognition is not a title. It is an oath.

This is a significant step on the warrior's path.
To walk as a Soto Deshi is to represent the dojo, the Sensei, and the lineage in every moment — in and out of the dojo.
We welcome and honour Michael Mitchel as he enters this next phase of training, accountability, and inner refinement.
